Peru

A little Peruvian town near one of the largest canyons in the world.

My friend, Vladi and I had been traveling in the dusty countryside for several days when we reached this small town oasis. Excited by the prospect of a refreshing dip in muscle-soothing waters, we set out immediately to find the locally-acclaimed hot springs. Our walk took us through the plaza de armas (every Peruvian town has one, basically a town square), which was scattered with locals enjoying the sunny day. Seeing the opportunity, I pulled out my soft Frisbee and tossed it to Vladi. Before long, a bold 6-year-old girl warily inched her way up to us, dragging her timid 10 year-old friend behind her. With a cute smile, she asked what we were doing. We explained the game and she was eager to play. Her friend hid behind her...well, as much as she could behind her tiny amiga. I gently tossed the Frisbee to the younger girl's right side, so it wouldn't hit her if she didn't catch it. The result was comical. Two seconds after it flew past her shoulder, she grabbed for it with all her might. Her facial expression was priceless. After several more tries, she figured it out. She starting giggling, yelling and having a rip-roaring time. When her friend saw it was safe, she joined in too. Before long, all the kids in the town were out playing Frisbee for the first time. It was wild! Eventually, the game petered out and we continued on to the hot springs. As a parting gift, the cute little 6 year-old ran as fast as she could toward me, leapt and hugged my legs. I guess that girl likes Frisbee.
